A glimpse of life in Year 1...

Autumn 1:

Children's musicality and performance skills will be put to the test as they perform a show at Brixham Theatre. As part of our Music Curriculum, the children will develop their confidence, stage presence, singing, speaking skills, whilst rehearsing and performing a show in our beautiful local theatre.

Our Music curriculum doesn't stop there, as the children will be learning how to play the Glockenspiels and creating their own ostinatos and performing short pieces of music to their peers.

Autumn 2:

This term usually begins with a bang as we explore The Gunpowder plot, in our first dive into our History Curriculum. Following this, our children will become weather presenters and they will learn about weather forecasts, compass points and lots more in our Geography Long Enquiry. Just before finishing for Christmas, we love to get creative and the children will be putting their Design and Technology skills to the test as they design and create their own Christmas decorations.

Spring 1:

Our Computing curriculum kicks off our new year as the children learn new and useful skills on computers. As part of our short Art Learning Enquiry, the children will be learning some new sketching techniques as they complete some observational drawings.

Spring 2:

It's time to get Creative as our Long Art Enquiry gets underway. The children will be inspired, whilst exploring artwork from a range of artists and use their pieces of artwork to inspire their own masterpieces for our Art Gallery Outcome. A favourite in Year 1 is our "Moving Robot" Learning Enquiry, which is taught in Spring 2. The children will explore algorithms to move robots around obstacles.

Summer 1:

It will be time to think back to times long ago, as we explore Castles. The children will learn about the features of Castles, locations of where they were built, why we have castles and so much more, before heading to a local Castle.

Summer 2:

In our final term, there is lots of fun to be had as the children will complete two more Design and Technology Learning Enquiries. Children will explore different types of mechanisms which they will use when creating their own moving picture books. As well as this, children will design, advertise and make their own smoothies. Our final short Learning Enquiry for the year is Geography. This will introduce the children to maps and how to use them whilst exploring human and physical features of our local area on a trip around Brixham.
